Jim Carrey: "The Greatest Lesson I Learned from My Father"

Jim Carrey is an award-winning actor and comedian who has enjoyed a fun, successful and lucrative career in Hollywood.

When he first arrived in Los Angeles, however, he never imagined his Life would turn out the way it has.

Yet, he truly believed in himself; and he believed the Universe had more in store for him than just a simple 9–to-5.

In this episode of my Fascinating with Sasha Tobago podcast, I share and discuss one of my favorite Jim Carrey quotes. Here’s an excerpt:

There is a fantastic quote that Jim Carrey gave during a graduation speech a few years ago:

“My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that that was possible for him.
And so he made a conservative choice, instead. He got a safe job as an accountant. And when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job, and our family had to do whatever we could to survive.
I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you Love.”

Jim Carrey vowed to himself, he was like:

You can spend your Life living your dream. Or you can spend your Life helping someone else live their dream.

Which is a better way to spend your Time?

His father always wanted to be a performer, but he didn’t pursue his dream and instead did the traditional route that society tells you to go through:

Have a family, raise a family, get a job, keep the job for 40 years, retire, you’ll be good, you’ll be set.

They don’t mention the fact that, a lot of times, these companies will lay you off, so they don’t have to pay you your higher salary. Or, they will highly risk your pension, so you don’t have the amount of money you were expecting to have in your retirement.

Or, they won’t tell you about the health conditions you’re working under, and you end up developing an illness that is terrible for your Life or leads to an early death.

There are so many asterisks involved in the so called “American Dream” that they sell you.

Because the dream they want you to pursue, is they want you to be a worker, so that they can live high off the hog, so to speak….
