Why Did Gen Z Choose This Woman to be Nepal's New Prime Minister?

In September 2025, after a swift and decisive youth revolution that toppled Nepal's alleged, corrupt government...

Thousands of Gen Z citizens voted online, via Discord, to nominate Sushila Karki as the country's new interim prime minister, until elections are held in 2026 to usher in a new parliament.

This historic event was amazing and impressive in a myriad of ways. Most notably, the core reason Gen Z was so excited to choose a retired woman as their new leader.

Which I explain, below, in this revised excerpt from this episode on my Fascinating with Sasha Tobago podcast.

"This is a very historical moment for Nepal, because Nepal has appointed [its] first lady prime minister, Sushila Karki, as the voice of this movement. And now she's the voice of Gen Z," said India Today reporter, Darshan Parajuli.

Which begs the question, why did Gen Z voters choose Karki to lead the country? Of all the people in Nepal, why her?

Well, here's a little bit of background on her. Karki is 73 years old, So, she has some wisdom in her years.

She has a law degree. She was a lawyer. She was a judge. And, she became the first woman to serve as chief justice of Nepal in 2016.

A year later, political leaders were hellbent on getting rid of her. So much so that she retired in 2017.

She wasn't chief justice for very long. Yet her judicial reputation struck a chord with young people in Nepal, who seem to have a high level of trust in her.

It is interesting to me that, of all the people they could choose, they chose her. They chose a woman — that's massive, that's major.

They chose someone who served as a judge, and has a legal background They chose someone who is 73 years old. She's not young like them. They didn't choose a young person.

And the thinking is that, overarchingly, they chose a leader who they felt they could trust.

"Gen Z protesters on the street, we did ask them this question: 'Who is going to lead this new Nepali government?' And... she's their favorite choice," said DW News reporter, Adil Bhat.

"Gen Z [is] really happy with this decision. Because she's known for honesty, integrity; and she's known to take a stand against corruption."

The young voters of Nepal chose Karki because, based on her track record and reputation, they believed they could entrust her to do what is needed to help get the country back on the right track:

To make sure the upcoming elections are fair and transparent. And to make sure good people are appointed or elected to serve in positions of power.
