Tyrone Power & The Battle of Iwo Jima

Movie star Tyrone Power, a titan of Hollywood's Golden Age, was a decorated military pilot on and off the silver screen.

When the United States declared war on Japan and its allies, Power enlisted without reservation; and with a patriotic desire to join the Marine Corps as a pilot.

Already an experienced civilian pilot with over 180 solo hours under his wings, Power received accelerated military flight training. In 1945, he joined the Pacific Front as a transport pilot based in the Marshall Islands.

During the Battle of Iwo Jima, Power and his co-pilot flew supplies in, and wounded soldiers out, of the crossfire.

Power returned home and resumed his acting career in 1946. Yet, he remained an avid member of the Marine Corps Reserve till his death in 1958.
