The Original Vieux Carré Cocktail Recipe

Mix That Drink

As discussed in my Sazerac: New Orleans's Favorite Cocktail podcast episode, Vieux Carré is a New Orleans original that was first concocted in 1937 at the Hotel Monteleone in the city's French Quarter.

Enjoy making and sipping the original recipe for this boozy drink straight from the Big Easy.

The Original Vieux Carré Recipe

  • ¾  oz Sazerac Rye Whiskey

  • ¾  oz Pierre Ferrand 1840 Cognac

  • ½ oz Italian sweet vermouth

  • ¼ oz Bénédictine Liquor

  • 2-3 dashes of Peychaud Bitters

  • 2-3 dashes of Angostura Bitters

  • 1 fresh lemon peel

  1. Fill an Old Fashioned glass with ice.

  2. Add in whiskey, cognac, vermouth, bitters and Bénédictine Liquor.

  3. Stir for 30 to 60 seconds.

  4. Hold a thin lemon peel / twist over the glass, and squeeze out some of the oils.

  5. Rub the lemon peel's underbelly 360-degrees around the glass's rim.

  6. Drop the lemon peel into the glass.

  7. Enjoy!
