The Great Pyramid of Meroë

by Sasha Tobago

Circa 1821. The burial site of a pharoah of the ancient Nubian kingdom of Kush, in modern-day Sudan.

This is what it looked like before an Italian grave robber blew the top of it off with dynamite in the mid-1830s, in search of buried treasure and gold.

Doing the very same to over 40 other ancient pyramids nearby.

Truly one of the most detestable cases of grave robbery in history, due to his callous destruction of ancient architecture.

I look forward to the day when the Sudanese people restore the pyramids of Meroë to their former glory.
